The leaves are turning, the days are getting colder…and the gift giving (and receiving) season is going to be soon upon us. Therefore, I thought I would share with you the top 8 gifts to give (or ask for) in my opinion for someone who has chronic pain, fibromyalgia and/or CFS/ME.
A good heating pad has got to be number one on my list because it is the gift that keeps on giving.
One of the main areas many of us struggle with pain is in the neck and shoulder area and this particular Sunbeam heating pad rocks because it gently straps around your shoulders, so you can sit up and have relief. This means it’s perfect for using at a desk or even sitting in a chair or couch…and…it massages, too!
Aromatherapy Epsom Salts Bath Soak
Epsom salts is actually magnesium…and as per one of my articles about magnesium, it is actually one of the BEST options to help reduce aching muscles.
Magnesium used as transdermal therapy (through the skin) is now considered as an excellent way to get magnesium into our bodies…and…a good soak can really help sleep on top of many other issues associated with fibromyalgia and ME/CFS.
Adding aromatherapy (natural plant and floral oils) takes things to the next level in regards to relaxation and relief. I love these Epsom salts bath soaks because they come with 2 different kinds that have essential oils in them – for sleep and for muscle relief – and unscented.
Speaking of aromatherapy, did you know that the lovely, gentle smells that these flower and plant essential oils can provide relief in regards to everything from calming anxiety to reducing headaches? (Believe me, I had no idea that becoming an aromatherapist was actually a HUGE deal in regards to education…it is NOT a 1 day course in mixing a few oils together to make things smell nice – but actually considered as a very accepted holistic option for the treatment of health conditions ie a course is around a year long!).
Therefore, having an aromatherapy diffuser, where the oils are not compromised by heat (nor are you burning things with an open flame (ie a potential fire hazard)) is the way to go. I love these funky wooden aromatherapy diffusers. It doesn’t just make your room (home/office) smell beautiful when you add your favourite essential oils, but it is also a cool mist humidifier…great for the winter when the heat is on and is drying out your house (and your nasal passages…).
This baby can run up to 10 hours with an automatic shut off – with just a few drops of oil!
Ok, I am obviously running on an aromatherapy theme for a bit of this…but if you are asking for (or giving) an aromatherapy diffuser, or just wanting to use an oil burner, then you are going to need some oils! 🙂 And…you can also use them for a massage, too!
Here is a beautiful selection of essential oils to mix and match and create your favourite blends…This particular box has some lovely oils for muscle pain, relaxation, sleep, rejuvenation and even helping boost immunity. (What an awesome gift!).
Best Ever Body Pillow
Next (but certainly not least) on my list will have to be a body pillow.
The people who know me well know that my bed and bedding is a critical part of my life. (Some people refer to me as the ‘Princess’ (from the Princess and the Pea).
Let’s face it. Everybody sleeps (or at least, that is the goal – not always possible with chronic pain!). And when you are struggling with a lot of pain, not only is sleep something that is so important for healing our bodies, but in many cases, such as my own, most of our lives are actually spent IN BED. But being in bed doesn’t necessarily mean sleeping…when we are in so much pain insomnia or even being able to gain a restful sleep can be very prevalent. Therefore, having things that can help us be as comfortable as possible is so important.
As being comfy is a crucial part of our lives and having a pillow that can be manipulated into a variety of positions including under our legs to reduce pressure from our hips and coccyx as well as being able to position it so our arms can rest on it, or we can lie on our sides with support behind our backs as well as propping our leg on it to reduce pressure can make all the difference in the world.
As mentioned above, with my ‘Pea-dom’ experience in all things comfy in bed, I have tried a LOT of pillows and several body pillows. And this Sanggol pillow is truly the bee’s knees. I have had mine for almost 2 years now – and it has never lost is plump loft. for more information about this pillow I wrote a full review on it, which you can read here. The ‘arms’ of the pillow are great for also using to prop a laptop on, too!
ps. Don’t let the fact that it is a maternity pillow throw you off – this pillow is truly a game changer in bed. Seriously.
Truly Awesome Fleece Sheets
Since we are talking about being in bed a lot and the importance of being comfortable, I thought I would introduce you to sheets that my husband says ‘they are like sleeping on a cloud’.
If you have not already discovered that you can buy super soft, cozy and amazingly snuggly fleece sheets, then let me introduce you to them.
Since purple is the colour for fibromyalgia and ME/CFS I thought you might like these sheets to brighten up your bedding!
Another great gift that is in the bed department has to an organic buckwheat pillow. Buckwheat pillows mould under your head and neck to provide you with support, and keeps nice and cool.
They come in a variety of sizes (and prices), too.
Personally, one of the best gifts to give (and receive when you are struggling with pain) has got to be a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). A gift that reduces (or even eliminates) pain – without drugs – is a definite winner.
This particular TENS has over 2,000 reviews and has a 4.5 star Amazon rating (so I think that says a lot!).
5* Amazon Rating for HealthMate Forever TENS
By Honesty is the Best Policy (verified purchase)
(I feel it is important to say that like most products, not all are the same in quality and TENS machines are no different. I like the fact this not only has excellent ratings but also has 8 pads…because let’s face it, we can probably easily find a spot to put each of these regarding where it hurts…and then some!).
Heated Foot Spa
I don’t think many people could go wrong in giving a foot spa…and this foot spa is amazing!
Not only is it heated, it has a waterfall waves effect! It also has a remote control, making it easier for people who struggle to bend down. Oh. And did I mention the motorized massage rollers? (Man, I could go for one of these right about now!).
Why not throw in some lovely aromatherapy oils and/or some Epsom salts, too? (I great way to get magnesium into the system – through the feet and soaking!).
So there you have it. My ultimate top 8 gifts for people with fibromyalgia and/or CFS/<E giving/wish list for Christmas/the holidays or any time you would like to give a gift to someone in chronic pain, that say, ‘I care about you’.
