Hello everyone (so, hi Mom and hubby!),
Firstly, as with all the writing I do, it comes from my heart – what I am feeling, experiencing and of course, questioning (What can I say, I’m a Gemini!).
The other night I had an impulse (or I like to call it ‘listening to myself’) to watch the movie White Christmas. You know the one…with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. Perhaps it’s because it seems like Christmas has been ramped up this week – I even saw a Christmas tree in someone’s living room the other day. Oi Vey!
The thing is, I felt there was something more deeply rooted in my thoughts as to why I wanted to watch this movie – in fact, I felt compelled to watch this movie – and it wasn’t because I wanted to get into ‘the Christmas spirit!’ (Don’t get me started on the commercialism and pressure of it all!!!).
Christmas? Not here…Snackmas is Where It’s At!
At Bodymap Apps HQ we aren’t Christmas type people – we believe that giving and sharing should be 365 days a year – not one. So we celebrate our own festival – that my dear husband dubbed several years ago as ‘Snackmas’ – the time to snuggle up in our jammies, watch movies (which generally have nothing to do with a Christmas theme) and shows we recorded for this day… and noshing. Lots of noshing. (And hopefully not another incident where we wound up with over 200 prawn based nibbles – for the 2 of us). And just….chillaxing!
Back to the Movie…
For those of you who have seen the movie White Christmas (and if you haven’t – do!), if you think about it, it’s actually not hugely about our modern concept of Christmas…or what we perceive Christmas to be these days.
There’s nothing about presents, the stress, the outdoing each other in regards to gifts, the food, the cost, travel hell, family hell…. not to mention for us peeps with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, CFS/ME, this time on top of the usual stresses tends to result in higher pain levels, flare ups and falling ill with colds and flu. (See my article by clicking HERE on what to do to reduce cold and flu risk and some tips, too!).
Admittedly…(and as a side note)
I am grateful that we don’t have the above stresses in our life regarding Christmas – and a lot of that comes down to us making conscious decisions in how we wanted to spend our day and the season- as well as making agreements with all those in our lives ‘no gifts’ (and you can just see the relief on their faces when you say this to them…). But I also know that we are a rarity!
Our biggest dilemma on Christmas is what movie to watch when and what nibbles to have. Seriously. We have been known to move the kettle and toaster and all necessary requirements for Snackmas into our family room – so we could tea and toast whilst watching a movie or a show.
That being said, I realised that my urge to watch this movie had nothing to do with Christmas and ‘getting into the holiday mood’. So. What was the reasoning behind my need to see this specific movie. Now.
And I realised…
The Movie Filled What’s Missing in The World Today
In fact, the movie is about all the things that feel like they are missing in the world as a whole today. Digging deeper, I realised that this is a movie ultimately about love, peace, happiness, care, compassion, vulnerability, courage, misunderstandings and support from and for fellow human beans. Heck, there is even a song about ‘Counting Your Blessings‘.
In fact, here are the lyrics for the song ‘Counting Your Blessings‘ from White Christmas, recorded so many years ago…
Counting Your Blessings Lyrics
When I’m worried and I can’t sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep counting my blessings
When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep counting my blessings
I think about a nursery and I picture curly heads
And one by one I count them as they slumber in their beds
If you’re worried and you can’t sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
And you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings
Listen to Counting Your Blessings by Bing Crosby HERE – it is a beautiful song.
Back to the Movie… (can you tell I have Fibro Fog and Ramble!?)
I realised that what it was that made me want to watch this movie was the comfort and safety it provided for me. We are going through times of real and indeed present and close to home fear. And I feel vulnerable. I’m sure many of us do. It’s hard not to…But I do know that we are luckier than many people on this big blue marble – and for all that we have, I am grateful. It’s about the nostalgia for a time that once was – where people were at peace – and happy.
Real and Present Fear…
I purposely don’t watch the news in regards to what was/is going on with much of the world, let alone our country, is because I choose not to be caught up in it – as panic, anxiety and depression are some of my closest enemies. It has taken a lot for me to be able to kick these guys to the curb – and I am doing my damndest not to let them back into my life again.
And this means – not allowing media feed my fear. Of course, I am not saying that I am oblivious as to what is going on in our world – I get it. Change is needed. And the only thing that I can see being the way forward is to create community based on love, compassion, freedom, peace and harmony – imagine living in a world based on those principles?
…and the only thing (and very important thing!) that I know that I can do personally and with my friends and family is to be positive. To believe that there is hope. That there are ways forward to peace through love of humanity and all that exists here. Otherwise, it is easy for me to go the other way…being stressed – which ultimately means going into ‘survival mode‘ which is not a happy place to live.
We all know one thing – fear feeds fear.
If we think and believe that there is nothing that we can do – that everything is out of control in our lives and the world -then that is exactly what will continue to happen – a world out of control. And our bodies will also be heading into the same state of being – which is in pain.
We Need To Be Tiny Tim…
…and believe that the Scrooges corrupting this world will finally relent and agree to a better, happier, more fulfilled way of living for themselves, their family, their community and their environment. Something has got to give! Changing our thought patterns to positive instead of negative thoughts is the way forwards.
And that means seeing things from a new and different light and perspective!
So, Here is My New Way of Seeing/Perspective of White Christmas…
I will spare you all the blow by blow account of the movie…but there was:
- Positive Thinking
- Helping Those in Need Without Concern for Themselves
- Being Grateful and Blessed
- Misunderstanding (due to lack of communication and willingness to discuss a concern openly)
- Seeing Someone in Hardship and Helping
- Snow (I love snow!)
- Liverwurst sandwiches and Buttermilk (ew)
The Best Part…
And the best part I love the most? They BELIEVED that it was going to snow. They even sang about it! And of course…it snowed.
Ok – I am missing major parts (but then you wouldn’t want to watch the movie!).
The Thing Is…
I know what it’s like when we are trying to not only get answers about our bodies – but relief. And I also know what it’s like going (for years) from one specialist to another – with no answers – some even saying that what I am going though is ‘all in my head’.
We quickly start to lose faith and hope – in well, everything – but mostly, within ourselves. We rely on others to help us feel better, instead of realising that the road to wellness ultimately lies within each of us.
With my volunteer work with people who have chronic pain and invisible illnesses, all I can tell you is that we are far from being alone in regards to not being ‘heard’ – and in regards to help? From all the research and connections with people, those who are getting the help they need are doing it under their own steam. These people (myself included), made a decision that enough is enough – and that the time has come to take our health into our own hands and gain control back. (It is this reason we created the FibroMapp app – to help people gain a better understanding of their bodies and patterns in order to gain more control and get a better quality of life).
I also believe that with all we have been through with our health – which for many of us has affected our lives from family and relationships to financial stress – that we end up feeling completely beaten down…and all that’s going on in our world is just too much to cope with. But the thing is – we actually do have choice. We have choice in the type of person we want to be – inside – and out. We have choice in our actions and our thoughts. And we have choice in regards to what we choose to accept or find other answers and help.
Ultimately, now, more than ever is a time for people to choose. We aren’t happy with the way things are – and by each of us taking care of ourselves, loving ourselves and each other is moving in the right direction. If we have access to the internet – the world is our oyster in finding out everything in regards to our physical and mental health and well-being – and how to make changes for all aspects of our lives – for the better.
Every Day Should Be A White Christmas Kinda Day!
What we need in this world now more than ever is to play out White Christmas in our lives. I think what I love so much about the movie is what I wrote in the list above – so a recap – there is joy, happiness, friendship, giving with no expectation of receiving back, love, compassion and being in a state of positivity and belief. (And some pretty catchy tunes and dancing thrown in!).
I’ll pass on the liverwurst sandwiches and buttermilk though.
Lots of love, light and peace.
