Quest to Feel Better
In my quest to do what I can to improve my health, reduce inflammation and attempt to heal myself as best as possible (albeit healing a multitude of bone spurs, bulging discs and trapped nerves in my neck is going to be quite a feat to accomplish), I am looking at (and trying!) all sorts of different/alternative and natural options. One of the main issues I am dealing with is definitely a lot of inflammation.
Although pharmaceutical medications have their place, for me, they have caused no end of issues from blackouts and seizures to insomnia, depression, anxiety – even suicidal thoughts. Not to mention constipation, itching and increased brain fog.
One of the truly amazing things I have come across is what I would consider a ‘wonder drug’ (albeit it isn’t a drug whatsoever) is the spice, turmeric.
Turmeric has been used for thousands of years. It is used a lot in Asian cuisine and is an Ayervedic medicine. In fact, over 6000 research studies have been done on turmeric – and in many cases, these studies show that turmeric works just as well – if not better – than pharmaceutical drugs.
Dr Uzma Ali swears by turmeric, she says, ‘If I see patients with problems like sports injuries, back pain, whiplash, fibromyalgia or sciatica, I suggest that they add a supplement of turmeric to their treatment – or, if they can’t take painkillers, that they use it as their primary remedy.’
Turmeric can be used in SO many ways, from treating eczema to lowering cholesterol. It is used as an antiseptic and to lower blood sugar. It is also being used to treat and prevent cancer and even Alzheimer’s. The list seems endless in it’s health qualities. Heck, it’s even used for teeth whitening! (I am trying to get my head around this one, considering it has stained my floor!).
Health Benefits of Turmeric
According to Dr Axe, ‘When examining the research, turmeric benefits go beyond that of these 10 drugs’:
- Anti-inflammatory drugs
- Anti-depressants (Prozac)
- Anti-coagulants (Aspirin)
- Cholesterol drugs (Lipitor)
- Pain killers
- Diabetes drugs (Metformin)
- Arthritis medications
- Inflammatory bowel disease drugs
How We Use Turmeric
For us, we do two things. Firstly, we use supplements that are turmeric/curcumin and black pepper. (Curcumin is a sub ingredient of turmeric that has excellent health qualities in itself). We take these several times a day. (And use our triple HealthLine award winning FibroMapp app medications/supplement reminder to make sure I do! (That was the shameless plug for our great app!).
Although the supplements are more expensive than buying the loose spice (which we do use and buy organic in bulk), trying to make capsules in order to take it easily has resulted in me staining my hands, so that I look like a heavy nicotine addict…and our floor and counter. (That is the downside of turmeric – it stains!!!)
Gorgeous Turmeric Spiced Milk
Secondly, we have gorgeous spiced turmeric milk each night before bed. All I can tell you is that it certainly helps us sleep. (Last night pain levels were at a 9 and hubby had a bad headache…after having some turmeric milk, hubby’s headache dissipated and I was able to sleep…meaning my pain levels definitely were reduced). Plus, it tastes lovely and soothing!!!!
