Do you ever have that niggle in the back of your mind that your fibromyalgia/CFS/ME is actually something else? What if it’s actually not fibromyalgia and maybe it’s mycotoxins and mold that’s the culprit in regards to our ill health?
What is a mycotoxin?
Mycotoxins are a group of naturally occurring chemicals produced by certain fungis. On top of the mold and fungi that you can physically see (growing on your walls, mattresses, anywhere damp with little air ventilation), the dangers also lie in air borne microbes.
Mycotoxins also grow on a variety of different crops and foodstuffs including cereals, nuts, spices, dried fruits, apple juice and coffee, often under warm and humid conditions. They can also be deadly. One fungi can create a variety of different mycotoxins.

Why not take a moment and read the 200+ co-existing conditions and symptoms of fibromyalgia and CFS/ME – you will find that the symptoms pretty much match.
Weird Thing Is….
Studies have been done and provided whopping evidence that mycotoxins play a huge role in ME/CFS patients. In fact…
The mycotoxin results were extraordinary with 93% of ME/CFS patients testing positive for at least one mycotoxin compared with 0% (yes, 0%) of the healthy controls. Over 90% of ME/CFS patients had been exposed to water-damaged buildings while none of the controls had.
Many doctors use the concept of ‘total load’ to describe what they think is going on in ME/CFS. They believe ME/CFS is not due to one virus or one toxin or one species of gut bacteria ; it’s the virus plus the toxin plus the gut bacteria that causes this disorder and they treat the disorder by attempting to ‘reduce the load’; ie by getting rid of the toxin or the allergen or the mold or whatever is that is depressing your system.

What If The Root Cause is Right in Front of Us?
A fibro friend posted an article on Facebook that intrigued me. A woman who was unwilling to accept that this was ‘it’ searched further and found something very interesting out. She found a doctor who did a urine sample for mycotoxins, which came out positive. In fact, her doctor, Dr Brewer, said, ‘“You have a black mold factory living in your sinus cavity’. It gets better
…because not only is it the foods you are eating that contain mycotoxins – but also the foods of the foods you are eating…ie cows eating corn – so the meat, the dairy…(By the end of this article you might find that the only thing that is left to eat is lettuce grown in Shangri La and tended to by garden nymphs…).
This is on top of mycotoxins that you may have been exposed to previously or currently from damp on walls and other places. Just because you don’t think you have any issues now doesn’t mean that you haven’t had exposure in the past.
Some of the (Many!) Perpetrators
And that’s just for starters. Coffee, rice, peanuts, fruit nuts, apple juice, mushrooms…the list is endless. In fact, the list pretty much reads what our GROCERY LIST was for this week.
Surely I’ve Been Tested For This?
Guess what? Unless you had a specific test done – through most likely a holistic practitioner, I can guarantee you that you haven’t. A test runs around $700 and it is not by any means a standard test carried out with bloods or urine.
Realtime Labs however can provide the tests and do the analysis. And there are over 400 strains of mycotoxins, each requiring it’s own test. However, there is a focus on several key ones that come up the most. For more information and a lengthy read from the National Institute of Health (NIH) about mycotoxins please click here.
If you would like to try an online test that is done visually and has to do with the neurological aspects of functioning this is a cool test to at least give you a hint as to whether or not there are underlying issues with mycotoxins affecting you. It is by no means a diagnosis, though…
To take the test, go here.
For more information here is the protocol by Dr Brewer, that has been updated a few times and is a page from our friend, Cort Johnson, from Phoenix Rising with the protocol. An excellent resource for FM/CFS/ME!
There is also a protocol done by Dr Shoemaker that is available here.
Unfortunately, this is not something that your run of the mill GP is going to have any experience in dealing with. This needs an expert and expert guidance and testing. This also means it is gonna cost $$$. 🙁
On top of this, it isn’t just taking some meds and getting better. There needs to be commitment to lifestyle change from eating different foods to moving out of where you are living.
And Then the Bomb Dropped
So last night hubby and I were standing in the doorway to our back garden getting some air and I was speaking to him about these mycotoxins.
He said, ‘surely you must have been exposed to more than some peanut butter to get this effect’. So I told him about my parent’s boat when I was young – a wood boat that had a lot of wood rot. I remember our mattresses getting covered in mold.
And then we both looked at each other. And swore.
We realised we are living in an area where whisky fungus otherwise known as Baudoinia Compniacensis is very prevalent due to a major amount of whisky storage houses.
It has covered people’s homes, killed trees and covers cars over time, we can’t get it off our patio stones…
But there has been no correlation (yet) between this fungus and health issues. Right.
There is actually a class-action happening in regards to the distillers and the cost involved in people in the area having to pay much more to get this fungus off constantly.
It Is Treatable!
The good news is that many of the symptoms can be treated and reversed.
The thing is that in order to get better, you need to not only kill the toxins in your home (ie mold) as well as follow a protocol by Dr Shoemaker or Dr Brewer.
I think that for many of us, we may not be able to be in a financial position to see a specialist in regards to this, get the testing done etc.
I think that we do have the opportunity to take these protocols to our doctors and ask if they would assist in regards to prescribing. (I know the Nystatin that Dr Brewer uses is a very common prescription and not too expensive).
Or in our case…MOVE. GREAT! The thing is, we can treat ourselves for it, but we are breathing the air constantly, so we are never giving ourselves a clean break from it living here.
DO NOT USE BLEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please share with others!
This is important folks! Just because you don’t see mold growing anywhere near you, that doesn’t mean that you haven’t been infected from the past! Let alone foods you are eating to continue to encourage yet new growth! YAY! (Peanut butter. It had to be peanut butter – my fave protein.)
As well, others not diagnosed with fibromyalgia or CFS/ME may have many of these symptoms – and are due to mycotoxins. PLEASE PLEASE SHARE!
