Getting Comfy in Bed

Getting into a comfortable position in bed, when you are in chronic pain, isn’t easy at the best of times, however, finding things that allow you to take the pressure off of areas of pain certainly can help.  The S2BMOM Maternity (and chronic pain!) pillow has certainly made a difference in my sleep – and subsequently – my life.

Almost a year ago, one of my Facebook friends was saying that she bought a full body pillow and it took both her and her mother over 20 minutes to take the pillow case off and put a new one on.  And she was exhausted afterwards…but, she found that that she was much more comfortable in bed and sleeping better because of it.

So, I thought I would have a look on Amazon (my favourite place…ask my husband!).  I came across the Sanggol pillow and saw the reviews (excellent) in regards to it being used as a maternity and nursing pillow.  After looking at the picture and reading the reviews, I bought one…and never looked back.

Features

  • Uniquely designed to follow the natural shape of the user by cradling the whole body and providing complete 360-degree support for the whole body whilst sleeping.
  • Well shaped around key areas and with soft edges throughout so that it does not dig into any part of the body whilst sleeping
  • Great back support whilst sitting up
  • Good lower back/hip support for putting under your knees
  • Easy to put pillow case on with zipper going around 1/3 of the pillow

Lack of Sleep and Chronic Pain – A Nasty Cycle

It’s a nasty cycle that I know all too well.  Being uncomfortable in bed, in pain and everyone else in the house is sleeping soundly.

And then, finally morning arrives and things need to get done during the day.Sanggol Maternity/Pregnancy Pillow, Body, Nursing and Pain Relief Pillow -Triple Purpose, 360° Total Body, Back and Belly Support ! Comes with 100% Cotton Pillow Case

You can barely move – let alone think straight. (Lack of sleep also causes increased brain fog, particularly in fibromyalgia and CFS/ME/SEID patients).

Something had to give…and that, unfortunately was me and my health, both physically and mentally.

Lack of Sleep and Depression/Anxiety

Did the chicken come before the egg or the other way around?  Same thing goes for insomnia and depression and anxiety. People who are depressed and/or have anxiety have a much higher rate of insomnia…and people with insomnia have a much higher rate of depression and/or anxiety.

In fact, there’s evidence to prove that there is a ten-fold risk of people with insomnia developing depression and/or anxiety.

Time To Take Action

After realising that no medications were working for my insomnia (but actually some of them were causing it! (Tramadol is an evil drug and was the cause of a lot of my restless nights!), I realised that it was important to start making my bed as comfortable as possible.

So.  I started with buying a Sanggol pillow and immediately started to notice a difference in getting more comfortable in bed and sleeping better (and waking up with less pain in my hips and lower back).

Turning Things Upside Down

I actually turned the pillow upside down so that the area that is for my head actually goes under my knees, allowing me to take the pressure off of my hips and coccyx area (an area I know so many of us are soooo tender with).

But that’s just me!  The pillow can be put into a variety of different positions in order to create the perfect amount of support to suit.

Conclusion

I love my pillow!  It has maintained it’s loft for close to a year now and it is fairly easy to get the cover off. (I admittedly flip the pillow over every 2nd week instead of putting it through the wash for less hassle).

It’s not only wonderful to lie on my back with, but equally, on my side, taking pressure off of my knees and hips.  I also love how I feel truly cradled in it.  On my side, with my leg over on of the pillow’s ‘legs’ and the pillow’s other ‘leg’ behind my back, I am truly supported.

The down side…well, for me, there hasn’t been one!  However, we do have a superking bed.  This pillow does take up room! If you have a small bed (as in, there’s 2 of you and you are already smooshed in), this pillow does take up space.

However, the comfort the Sanggol provides and the really comfortable 100% cotton, cool and excellent quality pillow case makes it all worth it!

Therefore, I am giving it 5 stars! The quality is excellent, it has stood the test of time, kept it’s loft and, is, well, AMAZING!!!  My quality of sleep has improved dramatically due to this pillow.  And it has certainly helped with my pain, too.

Lastly – as an addendum – I was in touch with the lovely Yomi, the owner of Sanggol and told her how her pillows were also helping people with chronic pain.  Yomi was thrilled to know how her pillow is making a difference not just as a maternity pillow but for chronic pain.

So the answer is 100% yes, the Sanggol pillow rocks in regards to chronic pain.  It is comfortable, has maintained it’s loft with pretty much non-stop 24/7 use for over a year.  It’s supportive – in fact, it’s even great to support my laptop! (Hubby and I watch movies with the laptop resting on the pillow and it is just the right height!).

Update:

Fantastic news for all our US readers – the Sanggol pillow is now the the US! Woohoo!

  1. Like laying on a cloud….sometimes makes getting into bed difficult as it is a bit high but worth it

Hi there! What I do is fold the ‘leg’ up to get in and out of bed and then tuck it down after I am in…It may be difficult though depending on your level of mobility. But after a year of attempting to hop over the thing, this seems to be the best and easiest option. Glad you like the pillow! Yay!

  2. I have fibromyalgia and nodula osteoarthritis With bulging discs in my neck affecting down my arms , shoulders and the full length of my spine I only manage around 3/4 hours sleep so to sink my 5.3″ frame into this body pillow is heaven it fits me like a glove . One thing I would like to know if you do a travel one ? a blow up one maybe ? If so my world would be complete many thanks for easing my carcass xxx

Awww that’s great news Rona! (Well, not great that you are struggling to sleep…I know that struggle myself and it sucks!). In regards to a travel one, I don’t think there is one…however, depending on if you are flying and luggage allowance, have a look at something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intex-66718-Raised-Queen-Electric/dp/B008OHHXUQ/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=fibromapp-21&linkCode=w01&linkId=DGJQFSEETVP4VISP&creativeASIN=B008OHHXUQ It’s fab as it blows up and deflates with an electric pump. It’s very sturdy (but a bit heavy with the pump attached). I find that it is excellent as it takes all the pressure off of painful areas. (I have one in my family room to watch TV comfortably). Glad you like/love the pillow. Yay!

  3. I simply love this pillow! It is a bit big, but boy is it worth it. I have been able to get really comfortable using it and have slept better as a result. Thank you for recommending it.

Fantastic news Cara! Glad you are finding it comfortable and are sleeping better. That’s what I love to hear! Yay!

  4. I have a blow up bed for when times are bad or going away but a travel version of this wonderful body pillow would be fantastic I hope the company maybe think about it xx

Hi there, I have it upside down so that there is a section under my knees. Of course, every person is different in regards to what is comfortable for them and where they need the support!

  5. Hi I am waiting on a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. I seen this advertised on facebook and thought I would research it. Your comments have been very helpful. But can you tell me how long it is ? I am 5ft 9 and wonder if it would be long enough. Maybe the makers could have a longer one for tall people !!

Hi Diane, I am 5’6” and the way I use the pillow is so that the ‘head’ part goes under my knees and the ‘arms’ go on either side of my body, and there is MORE than ample pillow for me to wrap my arms around if I sleep on my side (like a lot). It really has made a huge difference to my sleep. The support is exceptionally good. Thing is, if it isn’t suitable then, as it is through Amazon, you won’t have an issue sending it back. A.x

      1. Unfortunately Amazon are out of stock. I will have to keep checking back to the page. But it sounds like it would be worth a try. The similar pillows I have looked at have mixed reviews about it going flat quite quickly.

  6. Still not available in UK. Very disappointed as sounds just the thing I’ve been searching for to help with my pain.

Hi Jill, They are actually in the UK as this is where they are based. I have had a look on Amazon and it seems as though they are sold out. I am in contact with the owner of the business and have just messaged her to find out when they will be back in stock. As soon as I know, I will let you know. I also had a look to see what else is available at the moment that is similar – and there doesn’t seem to be anything nearly as good. So! I will let you know when they are back in stock…If I could recommend holding on until then as I have had a few body pillows before and they have been nowhere as good (and flat within a year!). I am sure they will be in stock soon. A.x
